Illusion

The art and magic of video (aside from fast, cheap, and easy) is illusion. What I need practice with, other than the techniques I am to be using in shooting, is how to build and dress a set, something I've done so far only minimally. When creating the illusion of a specialty store, this becomes problematic when your own collection of what is being sold is quite minimal. So what is one to do? Learn from real actual functioning stores, study and observe how items are placed to make the store look bursting at the seams, buy more of the specialty being sold in this type of store, and pray your friends will let you borrow relevant items out of their own collections.

Building a set, I have a feeling, will work out better than asking a specialty store to conform to my seat of the pants schedule.

"Hi, I was wondering if I could shoot in your store?"
"I see... well then, how much will you pay us and when do you want to shoot, and for how long"
"I can't pay you anything, I want to shoot tomorrow, and I need probably at least 8 hours, an employee of yours or two, and an amount of padding. Violence will be ensuing, you see."
(dial tone)
"Hello?"
