Censorship
Many people have an internal censor. It is what helps us realize that something we may really want to say, want to see, or want to do would be a really bad idea should we choose to go through it. There is also a defense mechanism that may be considered an internal censor as well, and that is selective memory. When some people go through particularly traumatic events, their subconscious may intentionally forget details, or skew them in order to forget the truth.
If less is more, then when creating a sequence that is to be demonstrating a traumatic sequence, it might be better to suggest the traumatic events, rather than to show them. The audience's imaginations can often be more gruesome than horrific details that would likely be poorly rendered.
